Princeton...and Rutgers!

Hi, everyone. This is a fairly long e-mail, but please read to the end because it covers a lot of important things. The debate season is winding down, and there are only a few tournaments left. The good news is these are all high quality tournaments: Princeton this week, then Swarthmore, then the 2007 Rutgers Invitational Tournament! More on our tournament in a bit, but first a few things about Princeton:

This tournament is world-class and nearby, so there is no reason to miss it. How good is it? Debaters from Oxford cross the Atlantic just to be there, so it makes sense for you to make the short trek down Route 1. Traditionally, we have been able to sleep in our own beds back at Rutgers on the Friday night of the Princeton tournament. There is a strong judging pool, lots of debaters from many different schools, a beautiful campus, and even good food. Please let Dan know if you can attend ( danahn@rutgers.edu).

Another aspect of Princeton that we'll be going over this week is the fact that it is a "tight-link" tournament. That means before each round there will be a resolution given out upon which Gov teams must base their case. To download a guide to tight link, visit http://www.geocities.com/nyuparli/novice_ed/pton_tightlink.doc. We will also go over how tight link works at this week's meeting.

Next, the Rutgers tournament, on April 13th and 14th! We have always prided ourselves on a well-run tournament, and this year promises to be no exception...but we need your help! We are in need of Rutgers debaters to judge at the tournament (we will provide specific judges' training at every meeting from here on out). Please e-mail Judging Director Prashant Iyer ( piyer8@gmail.com) with your availability for that weekend. Please make the time to judge: since debate is an entirely student-run effort, it is up to you to contribute to our tournament's success.

Another essential part of the tournament is housing. If you have gone to a tournament you know that schools depend on the kindness of both team members and the general student population to ensure everyone has a place to stay on Friday night. Please e-mail Housing Director Rebekah Lee ( rebakahl@eden.rutgers.edu) letting her know 1) Your name, 2) where you live, and 3) how many people you can accomodate. Also, start asking people who live in your dorm/your friends in general if they are willing to help out. In past years, members of the RUDU have literally gone door-to-door in their dorms to ask people...you'd be surprised how many are willing to help!

We'll be going over our tournament logistics in the coming weeks at meetings as well. The more teams we can accomodate, the better for the league, and especially for our team. It's upon all of us to make sure we can host as many schools as is necessary.

Thank you in advance for your help, and we hope to see you at the next tournaments!

Sam
