Tuesday's meeting + Swarthmore information

Hey guys,

Right now I have the following people down as interested in Swarthmore Novice:

Farhan Ali
Judd Baroff
Lorraine Belostock
Justin Debrosse
Jacob W. Petterchak
Natasha Ravisetti
Barbara Silber
Mahathi Vojjala

If you still want to go to Swarthmore Novice, let me know soon. Email me or debate@eden.rutgers.edu with your name, campus, and cell phone #. Again - it's a fantastic tournament, one of the best of the year, and a wonderful introduction into debate. It's a great chance to get used to being at a tournament in a non-competitive and helpful environment.

Everyone going to Swat Novice must make it to either the Tuesday or Thursday meeting this week. If you absolutely can't, email me, but we'd really like for you to at least be in one practice round before going to Swat.

Our next meeting is tomorrow night, Tuesday Sept. 24, 9:30PM in Hardenbergh B2. If you missed last week's meeting, that's okay, just come tonight and we'll catch you up. For those of you that did come last week, and/or are going to Swat Novice, we'll do a little last bit of training before putting you into practice rounds and critiquing your performance. If you aren't going to Swat, we still encourage you to come and try debating in a practice round, just to see what it's like.

Hope to see you tomorrow night!

Swarthmore Novice Info

Hi guys,

A couple things I'll briefly mention:

1. Sorry about that spam email last week. I made a mistake and a bot got onto the mailing list; hopefully none of you actually believed that you had won the Dutch lottery. (And if you did, I have some oceanfront property to sell you.)

2. Swarthmore Novice (aka Swat Novice) tournament is next weekend on September 28-29 - again, it's definitely a wonderful experience because you're only competing against other novices, and no other tournament during the year is like that. There's a real party on Friday night too. We will be leaving for Swarthmore about noon to 1 PM on Friday, and we will be back on Saturday about 3 to 4PM. (If you have a Friday class, tell your professor and he will almost certainly be okay with it.)

3. If you're interested in going, please respond to this email or email the debate account (debate@eden.rutgers.edu) with your Name, Campus, and Cell Phone #. Please do so as soon as possible - Swarthmore has capped their tournament this year to an abnormally small number of teams, and depending on how many people they will let us send, we may not be able to fit everyone. We will do our very best, however, and if we register with them earlier we are likely to get more slots. But if we can't squeeze you in, or if you just can't make it on Saturday, we will gladly take anyone willing to watch and not compete just for the Friday portion. Just let us know, either through email or at the meeting.

4. If you want to go to Swat Novice, you'll need three-four cases ready by that weekend. You should also definitely come to next Tuesday's meeting and the Thursday practices (see #6) - if you can't make it on Tuesday, let us know ASAP and definitely make it to the Thursday practices.

5. If you were not at last night's meeting - we still encourage you to go to Swat Novice. I would suggest, however, that you try to come to one of the Thursday practices (see below) - but at the very least you have to come to next Tuesday's meeting.

6. Our next administrative meeting is next Tuesday, same place / time (9:30PM at Hardenbergh B2). But I strongly encourage everyone to come out on Thursday nights as well for our practice meeting - we'll either run another novice training session, or alternatively run "pro-ams", where teams compoesd of one returning member and one novice debate each other. It's a great learning experience. (And if you want to bring a case to the Thursday practice, that would be awesome.)

Feel free to email me with any questions you have! Swat Novice has been one of the most enjoyable tournaments in years past, and we're hoping it's just as great this year.

Johns Hopkins this weekend

Hey,

If anyone is interested in going to Hopkins this weekend (novices too,
if you feel like you want to go just talk to one of us), you should
probably come to the meeting tonight (9:30PM in Hardenbergh B2, as
always); if you can't make it tonight for some reason, email me or Sam.

Reminder: send in candidate statements for elections on Tuesday

Hey guys,

Just wanted to remind you all that elections are coming up on Tuesday, and
we strongly encourage everyone to attend and vote. There are several
seniors amongst us that are graduating, so we're looking for some new
leadership. The positions are:

President
VP Executive
VP Finance
Novice Coach
Tournament Director

As an e-board member, aside from your position's responsibilities, you
should try to attend tournaments somewhat regularly and be active on the
team; you should also regularly come to our own meetings.

If you're interested in running for a position please send me a candidate
statement that outlines what you would bring to the table if elected. It
needn't be particularly long or flowery - just why you should be elected.
We'll use it as a foundation for the Q&A session on Tuesday before we
vote, so we'd like to have it on the website (debate.rutgers.edu) in
advance.

Sunday night I'll be putting up the first of the candidate statements for
everyone to read over.

Thanks,

Ed

Meeting this week cancelled/elections

Everyone:

First of all, thanks once again to everyone who helped out with the tournament. It was a great success, and we honestly could not have done it without you. Special thanks to Tournament Director Ed Fu, Housing Director Rebekah Lee, Judging Director Prashant Iyer, and Tab Director Dan Ahn, and to everyone else who went above and beyond in their help Friday and Saturday.

In light of the fact that so many of us put in so much time this past weekend, we are cancelling the meeting on Tuesday. The room will be available for an optional practice. In lieu of a meeting, we ask that everyone consider running for a position in RUDU elections, slated for Tuesday, April 24. We will be sending out specific information regarding available positions and their descriptions, but for now please start deliberating whether you wish to give back to Rutgers Debate and serve as an elected representative of the organization. We will also give guidelines for the creation and submission of candidate statements, so stay tuned.

Also, we hope to have some type of end-of-the-year social event for the team. Look for an announcement about that soon as well.

Thanks again,

Sam

Tournament Information

Hi everyone, just a few quick announcements about the tournament.

First of all, thanks to everyone who has stepped up to help out with the myriad logistics involved with the tournament so far, and thanks in advance to all who have graciously volunteered to judge at the tournament. We will reward you all with three excellent meals throughout the weekend.

Please arrive at GA (Van Dyck 211) on Friday no later than 3:45. We need to make sure we have all the necessary judges, and will likely have last-minute things to take care of, such as configuring the tab room. If you have not done so, please provide Prashant ( piyer8@gmail.com) with your contact information. Remember to be awake and at the SAC Raritan River Lounge (where Saturday's GA is being held) on Saturday by 9 AM.

Thank you once again; here's to an incredible tournament.

Important Tournament Info! Please Read ASAP

Hi, everyone! As you already know, this weekend is the 2007 Rutgers
Invitational Tournament! We are in the process of making our final
preparations for the tournament, and hope you are excited as we
are...hosting a tournament really is a great experience every year,
and is always a great bonding experience for both our team members and
APDA as a whole.

A few things:

First, housing. PLEASE E-MAIL REBEKAH LEE BY TOMORROW AT MIDNIGHT if
you are able to house debaters on Friday night. Remember, every
tournament we've gone to, we've relied on fellow students to house us;
it's time to return the favor. Let her know where you live and how
many people you are able to house. It is absolutely critical that we
have as much housing as possible to ensure we can accomodate everyone,
so please do your best.

Next, the tournament itself. For a look at our wonderful invitation,
visit http://apdaweb.org/forum/viewthread.php?tid=2437&page=1#pid19261.
If you are involved in judging, you must be at Van Dyck by 4PM at the
absolute latest. If you are able to help out earlier than 4, e-mail us
at debate@rutgers.edu.

To incentivize (a word that exists on APDA and APDA alone) you and
your housemates to volunteer to host people, remember that it will
entail you free access to the debate social event on Friday night
(non-debate related people will have to pay a cover charge). If you
have any questions or concerns, please let us know.

Here's to an quality tournament.

See you Friday,

Sam

Princeton

This e-mail is for everyone going to Princeton. We are sending three teams and two judges:

Rutgers A, Prashant Iyer and Samuel Zeidman
Rutgers B, Simon Berger and Dan Christopher
Rutgers C, Akbar Ahsan and Eisha Chopra

Judges: Dan Ahn, Eric Knecht

Mav and I will be driving. Meet at the Rutgers Student Center tomorrow at 2:45. Be on time; they're very strict on that at this tournament.

A reminder that we will be coming back to Rutgers on Friday night so you don't need to bring any luggage with you; for now, plan to meet on Saturday morning at 8:15.

See you tomorrow morning!

Princeton...and Rutgers!

Hi, everyone. This is a fairly long e-mail, but please read to the end because it covers a lot of important things. The debate season is winding down, and there are only a few tournaments left. The good news is these are all high quality tournaments: Princeton this week, then Swarthmore, then the 2007 Rutgers Invitational Tournament! More on our tournament in a bit, but first a few things about Princeton:

This tournament is world-class and nearby, so there is no reason to miss it. How good is it? Debaters from Oxford cross the Atlantic just to be there, so it makes sense for you to make the short trek down Route 1. Traditionally, we have been able to sleep in our own beds back at Rutgers on the Friday night of the Princeton tournament. There is a strong judging pool, lots of debaters from many different schools, a beautiful campus, and even good food. Please let Dan know if you can attend ( danahn@rutgers.edu).

Another aspect of Princeton that we'll be going over this week is the fact that it is a "tight-link" tournament. That means before each round there will be a resolution given out upon which Gov teams must base their case. To download a guide to tight link, visit http://www.geocities.com/nyuparli/novice_ed/pton_tightlink.doc. We will also go over how tight link works at this week's meeting.

Next, the Rutgers tournament, on April 13th and 14th! We have always prided ourselves on a well-run tournament, and this year promises to be no exception...but we need your help! We are in need of Rutgers debaters to judge at the tournament (we will provide specific judges' training at every meeting from here on out). Please e-mail Judging Director Prashant Iyer ( piyer8@gmail.com) with your availability for that weekend. Please make the time to judge: since debate is an entirely student-run effort, it is up to you to contribute to our tournament's success.

Another essential part of the tournament is housing. If you have gone to a tournament you know that schools depend on the kindness of both team members and the general student population to ensure everyone has a place to stay on Friday night. Please e-mail Housing Director Rebekah Lee ( rebakahl@eden.rutgers.edu) letting her know 1) Your name, 2) where you live, and 3) how many people you can accomodate. Also, start asking people who live in your dorm/your friends in general if they are willing to help out. In past years, members of the RUDU have literally gone door-to-door in their dorms to ask people...you'd be surprised how many are willing to help!

We'll be going over our tournament logistics in the coming weeks at meetings as well. The more teams we can accomodate, the better for the league, and especially for our team. It's upon all of us to make sure we can host as many schools as is necessary.

Thank you in advance for your help, and we hope to see you at the next tournaments!

UVA

Hi, everyone! Hope the last few days before spring break are going
well. Just a quick announcement:

We are planning on sending teams to the University of Virginia during
break (March 16-7). If you would like to go to UVA, you MUST attend
the Thursday practice this week so that you can fill out the necessary
paperwork. There will be no exceptions.

Even if you are not going, we hope to see you at practice tomorrow,
and remember we will resume meetings the Tuesday after break. See you
then!

Best,

The Rutgers University Debate Union
